IRELAND'S first national convention centre is ahead of its construction schedule and is due for completion on September 1, 2010.
Located in Spencer Dock, and part of the €10 billion regeneration project on the northern bank of the Liffey the Convention Centre Dublin is the country's first, purpose-built international conference centre and will total 46,000 square metres, (500,000sq ft) when completed. Designed by Kevin Roche, the Pritzker Prize winning architect and one-time pupil of Michael Scott, the building has a strong, cylindrical atrium rising 58 feet over the Liffey, a landmark feature recently completed and now fully glazed. Work progresses on the stone cladding of the facade and first and second fix mechanical installations are well underway. When completed the building will accommodate 8,000 delegates in any number of configurations over six floors. The auditorium, which runs over three floors at the upper level of the building, will take 2,000 people at any one time and The Forum, at ground floor level, has a 3,040-head capacity in theatre mode, but can revert to a banqueting facility with room for 2,000 diners. The Liffey Suite, on level 2, can accommodate 1,800 delegates the atre-style and 1,100 for banqueting this can be divided into two separate spaces, if required. The Convention Centre also offers four multi-purpose halls, 11 meeting rooms and four boardrooms, along with associated press/ delegate support facilities and general utility spaces.
