Dongtan Eco City, Chongming Island, Shanghai
In November 2004, Treasury signed a joint venture agreement with Shanghai Industrial Investment Company (SIIC) – an organisation that is wholly owned by the Shanghai Government. The purpose of the joint venture is the planning and development of the Dongtan Eco City on Chongming Island, just to the north of Shanghai.
The Eco-city will include approx 4.2 million of sqm of mixed accommodation, constructed on a site of some 1,000 hectares. This huge project effectively forms an entire new city suburb for Shanghai. Embracing the latest technologies, the development will also be a world leader in sustainable, environmentally responsible construction.
The development will take place on Chongming Island which is located off the northern coast of Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The island will be linked to the mainland by a new 9 km tunnel together with a 13 km bridge, both currently under construction. On completion, this will be one of the world's largest bridges.
The Dongtan plan will embrace the construction of some 18,000 housing units, three commercial town centres, offices and civic space, an international golf resort with two 18-hole courses and an Olympics-grade equestrian centre. The planning scheme will also embrace wind energy provision and a carbon-free energy centre.
It is hoped that the project, will commence in late 2006 and will open in phases up to 2010 in time for the World Expo to be held in Shanghai.
The Dongtan Development has generated considerable interest across the globe with several world leaders commenting on the ground-breaking development. Announcing the project in Shanghai, the Taoiseach described it as “a most exciting development which highlights the mutual benefits of co-operation between Irish and Chinese companies.”
